A very short story about the third judge simply says,”Judges 3:31 (NKJV) 31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.” It is short and sweet, but points to the amazing power of God working through a willing individual. Shamgar delivered Israel from the oppression of the Philistines.
The fourth judge, Deborah, is one of the first female leaders of Israel. After Ehud’s deliverance of Israel, the Israelites did evil and the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan. The commander of his army was Sisera. They oppressed Israel for twenty years. Deborah called for Barak and instructed him to take warriors from Naphtali and Zebulun and defeat Jabin at the River Kishon. He agreed, if she would accompany him. She agreed, but told him that a woman would defeat Sisera, and that Barak would receive no glory. They deployed, and so did Sisera, with nine hundred chariots of iron. Barak and his army routed the army of Sisera, leaving none alive, but Sisera escaped on foot. Sisera came to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, with whom he had peace. She covered him with a blanket and gave him milk to drink. Jael then took a tent peg and a hammer and drove the peg into his temple and into the ground. From that day, the children of Israel grew stronger against Jabin until he was destroyed.
