Notes from a sermon preached on Sunday, August 20, 2017 by Dr. Greg Sloop at the Kannapolis Church of God in the morning worship service.
James 1:21–27 (NKJV) 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Make a decision to change your affections
Lay aside (Gr. apotithemi – cast off, expose, cast out)
Filthiness (Gr. rhuparia – dirt, filth, defilement)
Turning over a new leaf?
No, a heart and brain transplant. You love differently, your think differently.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
Just do it!
Do the right thing!
Do something now!
Don’t just look in the mirror and walk away, forgetting that you hair was messed up or your nose was running. Is your fly open? Stuff in the corner of your eye? Spinach in your teeth?
Don’t just look at yourself: do something about what you see.
In the same way, don’t just flirt with the Word of God, hearing it or reading it and not allowing it to critique your life. Allow the Word to change you, transform your life into the man or woman He would have you to be!
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
When you look into the Word, the Word shows you the truth of your soul’s condition. A believer should look deeply into the Word and then go and do what it says he or she should do. Blessings come from obedience, and obedience means doing what the word says!
26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
Don’t just think you are religious. Don’t just wear the t-shirt.
Talk right. Minister to those less fortunate. Do something!
Lay Aside the Sin
Know and Obey the Word
Don’t Fake It, Do It!
