Defeat

Nahum 2:1–7 (NKJV)

2:1 He who scatters has come up before your face.

Man the fort!

Watch the road!

Strengthen your flanks!

Fortify your power mightily.

2 For the Lord will restore the excellence of Jacob

Like the excellence of Israel,

For the emptiers have emptied them out

And ruined their vine branches.

This passage tells more about the conquest of Assyria by other nations, such as the Babylonians, Medes, and Scythians.  They would join forces as an instrument of God to exercise judgment for Assyria’s acts against Israel.  Isaiah 10 told of Assyria’s conquest of Israel, and Nahum 2 declares the conquest of Ninevah in return.  Israel will be restored!

3 The shields of his mighty men are made red,

The valiant men are in scarlet.

The chariots come with flaming torches

In the day of his preparation,

And the spears are brandished.

4 The chariots rage in the streets,

They jostle one another in the broad roads;

They seem like torches,

They run like lightning.

nah2-fall5 He remembers his nobles;

They stumble in their walk;

They make haste to her walls,

And the defense is prepared.

6 The gates of the rivers are opened,

And the palace is dissolved.

7 It is decreed:

She shall be led away captive,

She shall be brought up;

And her maidservants shall lead her as with the voice of doves,

Beating their breasts.

The language of the rest of this passage speaks of the terror that will come upon Ninevah (Assyria).  They will see frightful images of shields and chariots.  The nobles of the land will be disoriented and the nations will come easily through their fortified walls and defeat them.  They will be led away like slaves, captives of their neighbors.  The great kingdom will be defeated.

When you face great enemies that take advantage of you, even if their oppression is a result of your own foolish actions, know that God will hear your cries for help, and will respond with action to bring you out of your bondage.  God loves you and desires to restore you as He brings vengeance on your enemies.  Be assured, your enemy, Satan, will be defeated!
