Zechariah 9:9–10 (NKJV)
9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
The battle bow shall be cut off.
He shall speak peace to the nations;
His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.’
This prophetic promise is Messianic in nature. The king is coming, and He will be riding on a donkey. This statement was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ as He rode into Jerusalem in His Triumphal Entry. This is one of many Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah which the Jews did not accept as applying to Jesus. Many of the Jews are still looking for their Messiah to come as a military or political leader. However, Jesus came in humility and without great pomp. This servant leader came to save us. He came to show us the way, not only to salvation but also to true ministry to the hurting and helpless. Jesus rode a donkey as He came to complete the work of His earthly ministry. How will you serve today in honor of Christ our King?
