This psalm speaks to the great work of the sovereign Lord in creation and providence. The writer speaks of the Lord being great, clothed in honor and majesty. He is covered with light and stretched out the heavens like a curtain. He uses the clouds and heavens as His chariot, He laid the foundations of the earth, digging out the oceans and heaping up the mountains. He sends springs to the valleys to refresh all life. He brings forth grass and vegetation to feed the animals and man. Trees grow to provide homes and cliffs house rock badgers. The moon and the sun provide light, and darkness provides rest. The works of God are manifold, and the earth is full of His possessions. Seas teem with life, the land is full of living beings, and they all wait for God to provide their sustenance. God holds their life in His hands, their breath comes from the Spirit. The psalmist declares:
31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
May the Lord rejoice in His works.
32 He looks on the earth, and it trembles;
He touches the hills, and they smoke.
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
34 May my meditation be sweet to Him;
I will be glad in the Lord.
35 May sinners be consumed from the earth,
And the wicked be no more.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
Praise the Lord!
This unnamed psalmist basically says that all of life is dependent upon God for its existence and its continuation. While life seems to simply carry on, with only occasional disruptions to the norm, there is actually a divine drama playing out that is wholly dependent upon the grace and help of God. Life is not an amazing accident, or a self-sovereign act of man. No, life is a gift from God that is beautiful and mysterious. When we realiz e this, we can truly worship God and give Him thanks for His provision and protection of mankind and all of creation. Without His providence, we cannot even breathe. With God’s grace and help, we thrive and see the wonderful plan of God unfold before us. Remember Who gives you life. Remember the source of your existence. Give Him praise and live another day with the knowledge that this gift is just that; a miraculous gift of God in this beautiful cosmos that is your life!
