Oppressed by the Wicked But Rejoicing in the LORD

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

1 Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
3 Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
4 That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.

  • Lord, hear the voice that speaks from my innermost being.
  • Deliver me from my fears.
  • Confound the schemes of my enemies, and end the rebellion of those who engage in sin.
  • My enemies seek to cut me and shoot me and speak bitterly toward me.
  • They are without conscience and do not fear God. Stop them, O LORD!

5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter;
They talk of laying snares secretly;
They say, “Who will see them?”
6 They devise iniquities:
“We have perfected a shrewd scheme.”
Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
8 So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
All who see them shall flee away.
9 All men shall fear,
And shall declare the work of God;
For they shall wisely consider His doing.

  • Lord, do not let my enemies escape judgment.
  • Lord, they lay traps with impunity. They think they are smarter than anyone, including You, Lord!
  • They think they can hide their intentions deep within, but You, Lord, will ferret out all their ideas and destroy them.
  • Lord, turn their schemes against them. Wound them, let them stumble into their own traps.
  • When they are foiled in their plots, put fear in all the hearts of the people who would follow their example.
  • Lord, help me to declare Your goodness and Your power among the world. I want all to see Your glory and believe!

10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and trust in Him.
And all the upright in heart shall glory.

  • Those who trust in You will then believe that they are safe because of Your justice upon Your enemies.
  • Lord, thank You for reminding me that I am safe in You. Protect me every day. I will praise You among all the people, because I know You to be my Savior, my Lord, my God!
