Probably some lambs went with the shepherds to see the newborn King (Luke 2:7, 16). Imagine a little lamb skipping with delight across the fields to go see the baby Jesus in a cave on the outskirts of Bethlehem. Then see her smiling with joy to stand right next to Jesus as she peers into his manger. Perhaps this Christmas what you’d like more than anything else is to accompany the shepherds and their sheep to get closer to Jesus? What would help you to be closer to Christ?

Obviously, we cannot know exactly what goes through the mind of a lamb. Animals usually operate on instinct rather than reason. However, the Bible does speak of all of creation praising God. Perhaps an instinctual creature with no real knowledge of prophecy or tradition would not have an intellectual understanding of the events surrounding the birth of Christ. However, the little lamb could have a nearly involuntary response to the presence of God manifested in human form, an automatic peace or joy based on the power and grace wrapped up in swaddling clothes.
Perhaps this is the season where we should stop thinking so much about whether Jesus is the Son of God or not. Maybe we should just allow the presence of God and the witness of those who have heard from the angels to show us the great God of the earth, whether in a manger or on a majestic throne. Jesus is Lord, regardless of the complexity of your thought process. Take a lesson from the happy-go-lucky lamb: follow the shepherds and experience the Christ-child!
